Anne Sutherland’s painting encompasses the feeling of a boat ride through the islands of the Lake on a warm summer evening. Using a variety of blues to create the sky and reflections in the water while working from her photo reference, she applies transparent glazes and Williamsburg Handmade oil paint to create the multi-layered water movement.

Slow Walk Along the Canal

This familiar scene with emerald and earthy saturated greens and grey sky creates a mood of relaxed enjoyment near the landmark. The Champlain Canal and Erie Canal has favorite trails for all ages. This scene also reminds me of Kirkside Park, Roxbury, NY and my first sketching experience there as an elementary student. The park is a treasure to the community and with my deepest memory it's here to be enjoyed.

The subject reflects the trees giving way to new green growth in the hills above Napa Valley after the fires. The title is from a John Burroughs poem.

Red Barn Walk with a Friend

Artist Anne Sutherland uses rich Williamsburgh Cadmium reds, oranges and purples and glazing to ground the barn solidly in a spitting snow. Spattering, scraping the linen canvas added atmosphere to the scene from a back road in her hometown, Roxbury, in the Catskill Mountains.
